Looks like local golfers will have one of their favorite practice haunts open after all this winter.

Thanks to a mulligan granted by owner Mike Ashley, Mulligan’s Golf Center in Auburn Hills re-opened today under a new name: Great Lakes Golf Center.

The massive domed facility, once partly owned by former Detroit Deputy Mayor Freman Hendrix and late Wayne County Executive Ed McNamara, had been closed since Labor Day and had faced logistical and financial struggles since it opened in 1999.

Ashley has owned and operated other local golf centers since 1993 and bought the facility on Dec. 3. Since then, he has been busy renovating the heated dome that features three levels, 87 hitting bays and an 18-hole miniature course.

Ashley said the facility has been thoroughly cleaned, new hitting mats have been installed, targets have been placed on the back wall and landing areas, the unique auto-tee system has been repaired and more than 75,000 new Top-Flite range balls await golfers.

“It’s a great facility,” said Ashley, whose father, Brian, had been part of Mulligan’s original ownership group. “It’s the largest golf dome in the world, as far as we know. It’s the only golf facility in Michigan with an auto tee-up system.

“I live nearby and it was kind of a shame to see it being closed up, especially since it originally had my father’s name on it many years back. I think he’s happy to see it turned around.”

Ashley said he has received about 200 phone calls each day and plenty of other electronic inquiries about the dome’s status from golfers searching for a place where they can keep their games sharp this winter and continue their summer golf rituals.

“That’s really what we’re kind of relying on, either the people that have cabin fever or those that are getting ready to head south and go play somewhere so they need to warm up,” he said. “But for a lot of people I’ve talked to it’s part of their routine. A lot of guys that had golf leagues in the summer, they played every Thursday. Well, now they come to the dome every Thursday, they each hit a bucket of balls and then they go to the bar and have a couple of beers, just like they used to do when they had their leagues.”

The facility, which features an outdoor practice area open March through October, is attached to 10,000 square feet of retail space, which had been occupied by Pro Golf and later Golfsmith. Ashley hopes to fill the space with another sports shop or possibly a sports bar.

For now, Ashley’s focus is to spread the word that the dome is open, and indeed it will be seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Ashley likely will keep similar hours.

“Yep, I live four miles from here,” he said. “I’m going to be here every day. This is my baby.”
